Financial literacy is knowing how to manage your money wisely
Financial literacy is all about understanding how to manage your money in ways that support your well-being, both now and in the future. It means knowing how to budget your income and expenses so you can live within your means, save regularly for emergencies and long-term goals, avoid falling into unnecessary debt, and make informed decisions when it comes to loans, insurance, and investment opportunities. With these skills, people gain more control over their lives, reduce financial stress, and build a secure foundation for whatever dreams they’re chasing.
Why It’s Important in Fiji:
- Many Fijians still rely heavily on cash-based transactions and prefer not to use formal banking or insurance services.
- Without financial knowledge, people are more likely to fall into debt traps, miss out on savings opportunities, or struggle during emergencies.

How BSP Life Supports Financial Literacy
- Insurance Education
- BSP Life Advisors help people understand why life and health insurance matters—especially when unexpected events like illness or accidents happen.
- They explain how insurance can protect your family, cover medical costs, and secure your future.
- Community Outreach
- BSP Life partners with Post Fiji and the Ministry of Finance to deliver financial literacy programs in rural areas, where access is limited.
- Our Microfinance team visits villages and farming communities to teach budgeting, saving, and how to access insurance.
- We’ve taken our insurance education and advocacy to the younger generation’s turf by collaborating with social media influencers to share vital information on the platforms they trust.
- Real Impact
- In 2024, BSP Life paid out FJ$99M in benefits—the highest in its 148-year history at the time.
- In 2025, that record was shattered with a massive FJ$499M payout, setting a new industry benchmark.
- The acceptance rate for claims remained at 97%, reflecting global best practices.
- These payouts supported education, business startups, medical care, and family protection.
Bonus Allocations to Policyholders
- In 2024, BSP Life allocated FJ$43.8 million in bonuses to eligible policyholders—a 14% increase from 2023.
- Over the past 5 years, total bonuses have exceeded FJ$180 million, even though the pandemic.
- The investment portfolio backing these bonuses stands at FJ$1.2 billion, with 92% invested locally.
These figures show that more Fijians are trusting insurance as a financial safety net, and BSP Life is delivering on that trust.
Financial literacy isn’t just about money—it’s about freedom, security, and peace of mind. With support from organizations like BSP Life, more Fijians can make informed decisions, protect their families, and build a better future.

According to the 2023 UNCDF Digital and Financial Literacy Survey, Fijians scored an average of 26.45 out of 52 on the Digital and Financial Literacy Index, highlighting the need for greater awareness and education. The report also found that only 58% of women in Fiji own a current bank account, with this figure dropping to just 51% in rural areas—underscoring gender and geographic disparities in financial access. While 78% of Fijians use mobile wallets such as M-PAiSA or MyCash, many still lack the knowledge to use these platforms safely and effectively. In addition, BSP Life reported a concerning rise in chronic illnesses and deaths among younger populations, with the highest number of medical claims filed by individuals aged 30 to 39, pointing to the urgent need for financial preparedness through insurance and health education.
These numbers show that while access to financial tools is growing, understanding how to use them wisely is still lacking.
